Since 1985, the BMW M3 has been thrilling drivers all over the world. And now, after five generations, it is still an automotive icon.
When it was first introduced, the M3’s purpose was to push the limits of what the already-capable 3-Series could do. The first model was called the E30 M3 and was in production through 1991. Today, these models are still highly sought-after thanks to their unmatched driving experience.
In 1996, the E36 M3 made its debut. It arrived on a larger scale than the E30; it had quicker acceleration and still delivered exceptional performance. It was a powerful sports saloon equipped with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder that put out 240 horsepower.
With a new millennium came a new M3. From 2000 through 2006, the E46 M3 ruled the roads. This generation offered more comfort and refinement, along with more power too. It 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder offered 333 horsepower and could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 5.1 seconds.
The E90 generation of the M3 arrived in 2007. These cars were even more powerful than before and its impressive V8 engine pumped out 414 horsepower. With this power, the M3 was faster than ever and its 0-60 mph time came in under five seconds.
In 2014, we got the current generation of the M3, the F80. This new model got rid of some of the disappointing features in the previous generation to bring the car back in line with its racing heritage. Buyers will find a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder under the hood that produces a whopping 425 horsepower. This generation also brought a new name for the coupe model, which is called the M4 now.
